Is someone trying to tell me something?

A few days ago I sent my passport off for renewal to the British Embassy in Paris. Like all other Brits in France no doubt I moaned and groaned about the cost of it all: nearly 200 euros including the compulsory courier fee for the new passport to be returned.

Today I got the proof of receipt:

Are they trying to tell me something?

Oh my! That is a lot of money. In 2006, I paid $80 for my passport and it was just $10 to renew it. Times have changed as it is now $165 to get a passport and $140 to renew it!

It certainly feels like a lot of money - over twice the price it would be if I lived in the UK ...

Maybe your passport was surrounded by a handbags by Hermes & Chanel? Although it is the British Embassy - hessian postal sacks sewn by prisoners more likely. I think I prefer my vision.
